In January 2025, a rare celestial alignment is gracing the skies over the UK, where several planets are lining up in a breathtaking display should the clouds allow it! Considering this astronomical event prompted me to ponder the symbolic meaning of what was happening. In astrology, planetary alignments are often seen as gateways to intensified energy flows, moments when the universe seems to be signalling an opportunity for alignment in our own lives. This spectacle of nature brought to light reflections on my own experiences with various divinatory practices.
Divination is the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown. The goal of divination is often to gain guidance, insight, or understanding about specific questions or to resolve uncertainties about past, present, or future events. This alignment in the heavens became a powerful metaphor for me with the alignment I have seen in divination systems—Western Astrology, Vedic Astrology, Human Design, Akashic Records, and Numerology—which, despite their varied origins and methodologies, often converge in their insights about individual paths and traits. Just as the planets moved into a synchrony, these systems, when consulted together, reveal a harmonious narrative of personal and spiritual dimensions. This synchronicity raises intriguing questions about the interconnectedness of these disciplines and their collective tapping into a universal source of wisdom. Here we delve into why these similarities might occur and what they may signify about the nature of human understanding and the universe itself.
To appreciate the interconnections, it's crucial first to understand the essence of each practice. Western Astrology is based on the positions of celestial bodies at our birth time. It proposes that these alignments influence personality traits and life events. This system uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is aligned with the Earth's seasons. This incorporates the Sun, Moon, and planets up to Neptune, considering these celestial bodies' psychological influence on individuals. It also includes Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto and emphasises personal psychology.
Vedic Astrology is based on the sidereal zodiac, an ancient Indian system that uses more fixed stars and places significant emphasis on karmic cycles. This primarily focuses on the traditional seven celestial bodies (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) and includes two lunar nodes – Rahu and Ketu. It tends to focus more on soul evolution and life karma.
Human Design is a modern system that combines elements from astrology, the I Ching (an ancient Chinese divination system that offers guidance on how to approach life’s challenges and changes), Kabbalah (a mystical and esoteric system of Jewish teachings that seeks to explain the nature of God, the universe, and the soul. It focuses on exploring the hidden, spiritual dimensions of reality and provides methods for achieving a deeper, more intimate connection with the Divine) and the Chakra (energy centres) system to create a unique genetic chart that guides us on how to live in sync with who we are.
The Akashic records is described as a celestial library of every thought, word, and action of every living being in the past, present, and future, consultations often reveal our life purposes and challenges.
Numerology uses numbers derived from a person's birth date and name to infer destinies, key personality traits, and life challenges.
Each method draws on different data sources, from celestial bodies in Astrology and Vedic Astrology to personal details like names and birthdates in Numerology, or metaphysical concepts like the Akashic Records. Although the Akashic records still tunes into someone via their birthdate and name similar to numerology methods, but information gained is not linked to meaning around these is just an anchor to attune to their record.
While Astrology, Vedic Astrology, and Numerology provide predictive insights about personality and life events, Human Design focuses on how individuals should make decisions based on their energy type, and the Akashic Records offer spiritual guidance across lifetimes.
Astrology, Vedic Astrology, and Human Design are anchored to the specific moment of birth, whereas Numerology uses lifelong static numbers for personality insights, and the Akashic Records transcend time.
There is significant overlap in the use of celestial data between Astrology, Vedic Astrology, and Human Design. Numerology's methodical approach shares some analytical similarities with Astrology, as it is numerically based.
Personal Narrative
All systems have consistently highlighted my inherent compassion and empathy. Both point to a nurturing personality, predisposed to healing and helping others. My life's purpose is to manage, guide, and direct others in all systems using my innate understanding of emotions and energies. This has not only validated my personal feelings but also my professional choices. It also highlights my high energy and excitement for new things and easy boredom and procrastination - linking to aspects of my ADHD diagnosis. All systems note me as a communicator and teacher with speech and writing.
Archetypes
Each system, at its core, draws from a set of archetypes that are universal across human cultures. Carl Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious suggests that these archetypes are embedded in the collective human psyche, manifesting through various cultural lenses but essentially pointing to the same human experiences and traits.
The interconnected history of human civilisations has led to the sharing and adaptation of mystical and spiritual ideas. These systems may be tapping into universal truths through different methodologies. Just as different scientific disciplines can arrive at the same conclusions using distinct approaches, these metaphysical systems may be exploring different facets of the same underlying truths about human life and the universe. For me, as a psychologist, this mirrors different therapeutic modalities having different frameworks of explanation and words used to describe and work with the psyche, but ultimately they are really all the same and are about helping individuals find balance, restore well-being, and access their inner resources for growth and transformation.
The principles of synchronicity could also be at play, where these divination systems resonate psychologically with each of us, reflecting our inner truths and life patterns in similar ways despite the diversity of the tools or symbols used.
For practitioners and seekers alike, the coherence between these systems can provide greater confidence in their guidance and a more integrated approach to personal and spiritual growth.
Integrating Ancient Wisdom and Psychology
I have found these systems to be invaluable frameworks for opening discussions. They serve as entry points, encouraging clients to engage deeply with their own psyche, explore their inner wisdom, and personally determine what resonates with them. This process often begins with the narrative provided which usually resonates.
Psychologically, the appeal of divinatory systems can largely be attributed to their ability to make us feel seen and understood. There is a profound psychological comfort in finding a narrative that seems to reflect our unique traits and experiences. This sensation of being profiled and known can be immensely validating, fostering a sense of connection and understanding of our place in the world.
In my sessions, for those open to spiritual approaches, I use elements of these systems not as definitive guides but as tools to enhance self-awareness and facilitate deeper personal exploration.
All systems provide a blueprint or map of an individual’s personality and life potential. Whether viewed as pathways to understanding, a shared cosmic order or as tools for personal growth and self-realisation, the convergence of these systems highlights a fascinating area of human inquiry. As we continue to explore these connections, we may find that these ancient and modern wisdom systems are not just parallel narratives but are intertwined strands in the single, expansive story of human existence.
